I Stand Corrected
What I have is not a furnace but a boiler. I have radiator heat which is produced indirectly by boiling water that is then via pressure forced somehow into the 1910-vintage radiators in the house. A furnace uses hot air.
It was just a small nuclear thermocoupler or whatever that needed replacing -- apparently you're supposed to do it every few years. Mine had lasted at least 15, so I'm way ahead, financially speaking, getting away with 135 bucks for the visit.
So am lolling around now relatively unclothed (the scarf has been shed), but warm, and reading The New Yorker, nice long article about Douglas Feith and his neocon treachery. If you recall, he's the man that Tommy Franks called “the fucking stupidest guy on the face of the earth." It's a good read, with the memorably quotable,
When I asked, for instance, if the Administration was too enamored of the idea that Iraqis would greet American troops with flowers, he argued that some Iraqis were still too intimidated by the remnants of Saddam’s Baath Party to express their emotions openly. “But,” Feith said, “they had flowers in their minds.”So will try to make the most of the rest of the afternoon.
