Obama in Evanston
Back from reception for Barack Obama. If all our candidates were as down to earth and practical, it would be a different world.
He urged us to work not for him but for others, to talk to Republicans, not to Democrats. He told us to go to Wisconsin. He made us feel that we can be better in all things if we just work harder. Finally, he told an anecdote from his travels with Dick Durbin to downstate Cairo, where Dick had been 30 years ago when racial relations were at their worst down there, but a mixed crowd of supporters showed up, apparently unconcerned, all of them with "Obama" buttons.
If you've never seen him in person, someday you must. He looks right through you with those marvelous brown eyes and makes you feel guilty because you're stupidly asking for his autograph and not out canvassing, because time is precious. Here's a few pictures:
Waiting ...
T-shirt presentation...
We must go to Wisconsin...
Stop preaching to the choir...
Who cares what Rove is cooking up in his laboratory...
Yes, we can...
The little campaigners..
The children were right in front of the stage at my feet (when they weren't running around). Don't think anyone noticed, but after the speech, Obama was very fatherly with them, explaining that he'd talk to them in a few moments and they should duck under the security tape so they wouldn't get squished. He wasn't all impressed-for-the-cameras at their signs, which in turn impressed me.
A wonderful afternoon, in any case. Plus he's hot, oh man.
