Yahoo! News - Clinton, UN Announce Cheap Generic AIDS Drug Plan
For a moment it felt like the sun had come out and it was all a bad dream and Bill and Hillary and Chelsea and Socks the Cat were all walking toward the White House together and everything was going to be just fine.
In a clear jab at the U.S. government, they said they had negotiated discounts of 50 percent or more on HIV (news - web sites) diagnostic tests and on drugs whose safety has been questioned by the Bush Administration.Must Democratic ex-Presidents do all the heavy lifting for this administration?
"We're talking of fixed-dose combinations of generic drugs, pre-qualified by the World Health Organization (news - web sites), to be purchased overwhelmingly from generic companies based in India, at prices as low as $140 per person per year."
This is about a third to one-half of the lowest, discounted price now offered. In contrast, HIV cocktails can cost more than $10,000 a year when made with name-brand drugs in industrialized countries.
